Chapter Six

Michael absently smoothed his hand over the firm, warm chest he was resting his head against. They were both awake, idly stroking and petting each other as the last of the day’s light faded away behind the distant mountains. It had been a wonderfully lazy start to his holiday, Michael mused. Loving and eating and playing, energetically and dreamily in turns.

Now they were content to just lie together, softly stroking and touching one another.

Michael felt strangely sated. More than having simply taken the edge off his physical desire, he felt content and at peace as he listened to the steady drum of Ethan’s heart. It was a good heart, he had decided during the day. Still, he didn’t know much about what made the man tick. They had been too busy exploring other, more urgent matters. Suddenly, he found himself wanting to know more about the man in his bed and quite possibly edging his way into his heart as well.

“Ethan, where did you come from?” he asked absently into the peaceful silence.

Ethan tensed then began to struggle beneath him. “I won’t go back there. I’ll just run away again. You can’t make me go back,” he said vehemently, a touch of fear hidden in his voice.

“Calm down,” Michael soothed as he struggled to sit up, still holding on to Ethan, and looked into his amazing green eyes. At the moment they were filled with agitation and a hint of dread. “No one’s going to make you do anything you don’t want to do.”

Ethan just looked at him.

“Okay. I’m not going to make you do anything you don’t want to do,” he rephrased.

Ethan still looked slightly suspicious, but he also saw overwhelming relief fill his face as well, and it made Michael’s heart ache. As the tension gradually melted away from his lover’s slight frame, he felt the need to continue to comfort and reassure him.

“Never, Ethan. I promise. I’ll never make you do anything you don’t want to do.”

It was as if he had handed Ethan the keys to the eternal city. The wonder and awe on his face made Michael uneasy. What on earth had his man been through?

“I don’t want to go,” Ethan finally blurted out, as if challenging his promise to him.

“I don’t want you to go either,” Michael replied evenly.

“You want me to stay?” Ethan asked, a hopeful look slowly entering his eyes.

Michael nodded silently. The three little words he heard whispering in his head might be too much right now, but he didn’t deny he was starting to feel them, and he didn’t want to lose the opportunity to keep this amazing man in his life. Ethan must have understood what he didn’t say because he launched himself at Michael, knocking the breath out of him as they tumbled back in the bed. He felt a chuckle, both of relief and amusement at Ethan’s antics bubble up inside him, and let it out on a sigh of contentment.

After a long silence of just holding and stoking one another, Michael quietly began to explain.
